예멘에서 기자로 활동했던 이스마일. 2015년 3월 예멘 내전이 본격화되면서 이스마일이 다니던 신문사도 문을 닫았다. 이스마일은 2016년 12월 예멘을 탈출했다. 지금은 제주의 한 게스트하우스에 머물고 있다. 한국에서 난민 지위를 인정받게 되길 기다리는 중이다. 그가 직접 쓰는 예멘 안팎의 이야기를 10여 회에 걸쳐 게재한다. 기사에 함께 담을 짧은 본인소개 문구를 부탁하자 이스마일은 "나는 오직 사람일 뿐"이라며, "그것으로 충분하다"고 답했다.<편집자 주>
내가 인간미 넘치는 제주도에 도착한 바로 그 첫 순간부터 모든 것이 제주 오기 전에 일어났던 일들보다 한층 더 아름답게 풀려갔다, 이상하다 생각되는 것들까지 포함해서. 나는 이 글에서 내가 매우 가깝게 알게 된 지역주민들에 대해 쓰려 한다.
해안들, 폭포들, 산들, 길들, 현대적 차들, 교통신호들, 쓰레기 분리 등 섬의 아름다움 외에, 일출과 일몰의 아름다움 외에, 가까이 하지 않으면 알 수 없는 사람들의 마음에 또 다른 아름다움이 존재한다.
(미스터 림) 나는 여기 제주도의 신비로운 운명에 의해 우연히 미스터 림을 만났다. 내가 그에 대해 아는 것은 그가 내가 여기 이 섬에 도착한 후 머물게 된 장소의 주인이고 그가 모두에게 미소 짓고 손님들을 마치 자신의 가족처럼 대우한다는 것이 전부이다.
어느 날 나는 저녁 식사 때 그와 이야기하게 되었고 그가 10년 전, 예멘이 한국에 개스를 팔 때 예멘에 있었다는 것을 일게 되었다. 이 신비로운 운명 또한 우리가 삶의 앞에 놓여있는 길을 친구로서 같이 하게 한다.

(올레호텔의 주인과 그 아내) 비록 내가 훌륭한 부부인 그들의 호텔에 살지 않았지만 그들을 알게 되면서 제주도와 이 곳 사람들의 면면을 깨닫게 되었다. 제주도에 있는 예멘 난민들이 제주에 들어온 초기에 올레호텔에 가장 많이 머물렀다.
그들 부부는 함께 예멘 난민들 모두에게 주저없이 정보 조력을 제공하거나 임대료나 그 밖의 문제 등에 대해 정말 많은 도움을 주었다. 그들을 알게 된 것은 감사하고 고마운 일이었다. 지금까지 내와 다른 예멘 난민들이 겪은 모든 일에 잠깐이나마 긍정의 미소를 을 수 있었다.
나는 제주의 변두리에서 많은 할머니들을 마주치게 되는 것이 신기했다. 그러나 나는 왜 그런가 알게 되었다. 제주가 돌, 바람, 여자 세 가지로 유명하다는 것을 알게 되었다. 그런데 왜 여자들인가? 이 질문에 대한 대답은 과거에 이 섬에서 4.3으로 인해 많은 남자들이 학살되었다는 것이었다. 이는 전쟁을 피해 제주에 온 예멘 난민들의 대다수가 왜 남자인지에 대한 답이 될 것이다. 그리고 이것은 세계 여러 전쟁들에서 공식처럼 일어나는 일이기도 하다.
(페이스북 친구들) 이는 언급할 가치가 충분한 또 다른 부분이다. 페이스북을 통해 만난 대부분의 이들이 예멘 난민과의 연대라는 운명을 가져왔다. 나는 그 중의 몇 몇과 실제로 만나는 친구가 되었다. 인권 관련해 연대하는 한국인들은 우리로 하여금 자부심을 느끼게 한다. 그들은 한국이라는 나라가 훌륭한 이유를 대변한다.
(나의 한국 가족) 나는 난민으로 한 한국 가족의 식사에 초대되는 날이 있을 것이라곤 생각도 못했었다. 그러나 그것은 불가능한 일이 아니었다.
내가 살았던 곳을 떠난 후 나에게는 돈도, 잘 곳도 없었다. 비영리단체들이 내가 살 곳을 제공했다. 난민들에게 제공된 무료 숙소들은 다 찼고 나는 이에 대한 해결을 찾을 것이라 생각했다.
나는 한 한국 여성에게 나에게 무슨 일이 일어났는지 말했다. 그를 만나기 전 그가 예민 난민들을 돕고 있다는 것을 알고 있었다. 그는 나를 그의 집으로 초대했고 그의 남편은 함께 나의 이야기를 긴 시간 들어주었다.

Knowing them was only a grateful, thankful and fleeting smile to greet all that I had been going through with Yemeni refugees until now.
(Emo) that grandmother working in a grocery store in City Hall and I always ordered the grocery store to buy cigarettes and I was on my way to where I live.
She does not speak English but speaks humanely and represents the real and bright face of warm beauty in the hearts of local people on the island.
I have three interviews on the Korean news channel and although my face was covered, Emo recognized me and became closer to me more than anyone else on this island.
I was surprised by my encounter with many grandmothers on the outskirts of the island but I knew why it was later and I knew that this island is famous for three things: stone, wind and women, but why women? The answer was that most of the men were killed in the 4.3 that took place here before, so everyone should know why most Yemeni refugees fleeing the war are men and this is one of the laws of war in the world.
(Friends of Facebook) This is another category worth talking about and most of them brought fate to solidarity with Yemeni refugees and some of them became a friend of mine on the ground. They represent a great country like South Korea and offer us pride in their loyalty to them in their solidarity with human rights.
(My Korean family) It was not my expectation that one day I would be invited as a refugee to a meal with a Korean family but it was not impossible.
After I left the place where I lived, I had no money and no place to sleep so that the free places for the refugees were full and I thought I would find a solution so that the NGOs would provide me with a place.
I was talking to a Korean woman about what had happened and had known her before and she was helping the Yemeni refugees and she invited me to her house and met her husband who was standing with her to listen to my story with time.
And so I was invited not to sleep until I find another place but to become a member of the family is a family came from paradise and because of these all I feel spiritual peace with myself as a human.
Yes, because of all of these are my great view of South Korea and my point of view will not be changed even by those standing against us from the Koreans or even if my asylum file is not accepted.
